Favorite Christmas Music: O Magnum Mysterium

Sometime around Thanksgiving I usually end up with a Christmas tune or text (or several) running around in my head, and it tends to stay there all the way through December. In order to put this malady to use, I'm sharing a series of posts dedicated to some of my favorite Christmas music - the music that's stuck in my head this year. My favorites come from many different genres and styles and I hope you'll enjoy exploring this music with me.

Two favorite settings of the Latin chant O Magnum Mysterium often come to mind.

The first is by 16th-century Spanish composer, Tomas Luis de Victoria. The work is performed here by The Sixteen under the direction of Harry Christophers.

The second setting is by Morten Lauridsen. Lauridsen is an American composer who has taught composition at the University of Southern California for more than 40 years. The video is of a recent performance by the Atlanta Master Chorale.
