In January of this year, I was able to travel to Ethiopia for just over a week. I met with church and community leaders, participated in a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony, searched for hippos on Lake Ziway (I never saw any; probably safer that way!), and enjoyed the country tremendously. One of the highlights of the trip was spending an afternoon working with a youth choir (pictured above) at an orphanage/community center in the highlands of Ethiopia. These students were an absolute joy to rehearse with. We shared no common language but through gestures, voice inflection, and lots of smiles and laughing we were able to communicate and work on several pieces of their repertoire together. Ethiopia is an extraordinary country and I can't wait to go back and hear these students sing again.
